John Chapter 14-17 – Jesus Teachings Before He is Crucified

*How did the Passover represent Jesus? Just like communion – Bread, wine

After the Passover dinner Jesus talked to his disciples.

*What was going to happen to him the next day? Jesus was going to be crucified

*Did Jesus know he was going to be crucified the following day?  Yes

*If you knew you were going to leave the world and die a painful death, what would you say to your close friends?

Jesus comforted them.

Read John 14:1&2

1 “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me.

2 There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?

*Where is this place with many rooms?  Heaven

For all of you who are believers, you will have a room in our Father’s house.

*How do you imagine heaven?  I imagine heaven as a place that is more beautiful that any place on earth.  I think we work there, but work we all love, and we visit with our friends, and worship God often.  But it won’t be boring.

*How does the world imagine heaven? Colorless clouds, playing harps – how boring.  That is what the Devil wants you to believe.  But heaven, I believe will be the most exciting, beautiful place where we will never want to leave throughout all eternity.

Read John 14:6

6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.

*How ways are there to God? One way, Jesus.  Don’t believe the world when they tell you the Muslim god, Buddha god and all other religions are the same.  Even being just a Jew will not get you to heaven, you must believe in Jesus.

Read John 14:15-17

15 “If you love me, obey my commandments.

16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.

17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.

*Who does Jesus leave to help us?  The Holy Spirit.

*He is a counselor, what does a counselor do? He tells us the best way to live our lives.

*How does the Holy Spirit speak to us?  He lives in us, if we listen and pray, we can hear him.

*Does the world believe in the Holy Spirit? Why not? Because they cannot see the Holy Spirit.

*If you are a believer, have you ever felt the Holy Spirit and known he is alive?

Read John 15:1&2

1 “I am the true grapevine, and my Father is the gardener.

2 He cuts off every branch of mine that doesn’t produce fruit, and he prunes the branches that do bear fruit so they will produce even more.

*If we are believers Jesus is the vine and we are what?  The branches

*What is God the Father?  The gardener

*Anybody see a grape vine grow?  If you do not trim it every year it will not product fruit, or much fruit.  All the dead wood needs to be removed in order for the vine to grow properly. If you trim it, it will grow in fuller, more beautiful, have more fruit.

*Why do you think God trims our branch?  He wants us to grow more fruit.  Removes the dead wood, or sin on our vine.

Read John 16:33

33 I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

*Why did Jesus tell the disciples all these things right before he died on the cross?  That they would have peace and be strong, by his death he overcame the world.

Jesus then prayed for them and us.

Read John 17:14&15

14 I have given them your word. And the world hates them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world.

15 I’m not asking you to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from the evil one.

*Why does the world hate us? We remind the world of their sin.  Also the devil for now rules the world, and the devil hates Jesus.

*Why doesn’t Jesus take us out of the world?  Why are we here if we are not a part of the world? We live to bring others to Christ; if we leave we would not be here to share our faith with others.

Read John 17:20&21

20 “I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message.

21 I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.

*You may not live to see Jesus come back a second time.  You may die before then but what remains?  The message

*How do people believe in the message?  By seeing that you are different, that Christ lives in you.  By spreading the message.  By the Holy Spirit moving in their life.
